Tangier to Fes via Chefchaouen

For many visitors to Morocco, Chefchaouen is near the top of the list of places to visit (and for good reason). We receive many requests for advice about the best way to include Chefchaouen in Morocco travel itineraries. So the question is, what is the best way to do it?

Almost all visits to Chefchaouen start from either Tangier or Fes. This is because Chefchaouen is located between Tangier and Fes, albeit a little bit closer to Tangier than to Fes. Journey time by car from Tangier to Chefchaouen is about 2 hours 30 minutes, and from Chefchaouen to Fes it is about 3 hours 30 minutes.

Some choose to stay overnight in Chefchaouen before continuing their journey. In our opinion, 1 night is enough. Chefchaouen is a small town and it doesn’t take very long to see everything. Staying for longer than 1 night is not necessary unless you are planning to spend a lot of time hiking in the mountains, as Chefchaouen is located in a very beautiful part of the countryside.

Is it possible in one day?

Your itinerary may not afford you the luxury of staying overnight in Chefchaouen, so you may be interested in doing the full journey from Tangier to Fes with a stop in Chefchaouen in one day, in order not to miss out on the famous blue town. It is a long day, but it is certainly possible, and since Chefchaouen is small, you don’t need to spend much time there in order to see everything and appreciate it.

The total driving time is about 6 hours, not including the stop in Chefchaouen. Most visitors spend no longer than 3 hours in Chefchaouen. On our one-day itineraries from Tangier to Fes via Chefchaouen (or vice-versa), we do have a soft limit of 3 hours’ waiting time in Chefchaouen, because from a safety perspective you will have the same driver all day and the roads require a lot of concentration.

Of course, you can spend longer in Chefchaouen if you like, but in this case we would not be able to offer the discounted one-day rate and you would instead need to book two, separate one-way transfers. You may also be interested in our Chefchaouen day trips from Tangier.

Will we have enough time in Chefchaouen?

Yes. Many visitors overestimate the time they will need in Chefchaouen. It takes just 20 minutes to walk from one side of the town to the other side, and all of the main sites and attractions are in or nearby the blue medina. For most people, 3 hours is enough to see everything and have lunch, before continuing. It is important to remember that this is a long day trip, with 6 hours of driving time, so most people are quite tired by the end!
